Montreal, March 7, 2008: A wide spectrum of community associations, NGO’s and labor unions have united to launch a joint appeal to people across Canada and to government of Canada to call for peace in Palestine.

“Israel’s bombing of an important medical center in Gaza is inexcusable” affirms Louis Roy of Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN). This recent bombing not only destroyed the medical center’s building, but also an ambulance, the medical supplies, as well as special equipment for disabled people.

“As disabled people, we are particularly attuned to the fate facing people with similar abilities around the globe; the destruction of basic infrastructure intended for Palestinians with a disabilities also impacts us”, emphasizes Leon Bosse of Confédération des organismes de personnes handicapées du Québec (COPHAN), an important organization that draws together agencies from throughout Quebec that advocate for the rights of disabled people.

“For months, more than a million Palestinians have been taken hostage by the Israeli military and government; the closure of the Palestinian territories is worsened by daily bombardment and regular military incursions. Each day, Palestinian civilians — very often children — are killed; a situation that must end immediately,” outlines Rejean Parent of Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ).

“According to the Center for Palestinian Human Rights, based in Gaza, at least 120 deaths — including 95 civilian — and more than 300 casualties have been counted throughout the last week” continues Dalia Merhi of Tadamon!.

For Rene Roy of Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), “It is critical that the violence stops immediately and that human rights are respected.”

Confronted with this humanitarian crisis in Gaza, these organizations are launching two appeals:

A demand that the Canadian government takes a public position against the bombardment of Gaza and pressure Israel to immediately cease all attacks.

Additionally to launch a financial campaign to reconstruct the clinic in Gaza, destroyed by the Israeli military, the objective is to collect 100 000$. To achieve this, people are encouraged to visit the website, http://www.unecliniquepourgaza.org to make a donation and sign the petition addressed to the Canadian government.
