Misrepresentation of Quebec Jewish Community opinions by Quebec-Israel Committee

To the editor (Gazette) …
from Robert Silverman

Dear Editor,

I object to and I am made very nervous by the attempt of the Quebec-Israel Committee to portray the Jewish Community of Quebec as supporting Israel in its present massive collective punishment of the people of Lebanon and Gaza.

I am referring to a full page paid advertisement in the front sections of the Gazette and of La Presse of Saturday August 5 – For a Just Peace in the Middle East- signed “Quebec-Israel Committee, representing the Quebec Jewish community and friends of Israel”

How does the Quebec-Israel Committee represent the Jewish community of Quebec? The word Jewish is not even in their name!

It would seem that Hassidic Rabbi Weiss, of the Jews United Against Zionism, who was carrying the front banner alongside a Muslim Imam at the massive protest against the Israeli bombings this past Sunday, – Gazette August 7 – depicts the Jewish community in a more authentic way or at least illustrates a tendency within it, than the Quebec-Israel Committee.

There are 90,000 Jews in Quebec. I am and always have been a member of the Quebec Jewish community. Jews, like all Canadians, have varying opinions on the present war. Some agree with Israel’s policy now, others oppose it.

By falsely declaring in expensive full page ads in the Gazette and La Presse that it is representing the Jewish community of Quebec in supporting Israel now, the Quebec-Israel Committee and its executive director Mr. Luciano Del Negro has created a terrible disservice to the Jewish people by associating us with universally condemned human rights violations, widely visible in the media, by Israel in Lebanon.

This thoughtless and irresponsible ad of the Quebec-Israel Committee could result in the growth of hostility towards Jewish people among readers.

You’re right, Robert – Ehud Olmert is Jewish like Mussolini was Catholic. He wears the name, but he ignores the ethics. I’ll take my Judaism from rabbi Weiss.
