This popular education initiative aims to build collective knowledge on Canada’s role in the Middle East, specifically on supporting Israel’s apartheid policies in Palestine, while also creating spaces within the context of Quebec’s student movement for developing collective strategies to confront war and racism both at home and abroad.

Around the world there is a growing movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions to be applied to the Israel, in order to pressure the Israeli government to end ongoing human rights violations against Palestinians living in the occupied territories and within Israel.

This global boycott movement against Israeli apartheid, supported by a large majority of Palestinian civil society, is not targeted at Israelis; on the contrary it is also addressed to conscientious Israelis, urging them to support international efforts to bring about Israel’s compliance with international law and fundamental human rights, both necessary elements in reaching true peace in the region based on justice.

Today’s international campaign against Israeli apartheid is a fight for equality, a struggle that will continue until all Palestinians are granted their basic human rights, including the right of return for all Palestinians living in the Diaspora.

Israel’s ongoing occupation and colonization in the West Bank (including Jerusalem) and Gaza for over forty years, in violation towards international law and multiple U.N. resolutions.

Palestinians face a matrix of Israeli-only roads, electrified fences, over five-hundred military checkpoints and roadblocks that erase freedom of movement. Israel’s apartheid wall, condemned by the International Court of Justice in 2005, snakes through Palestinian lands, further annexing territory and surrounding Palestinian communities with electrified barbed wire fences and an eight-meter high concrete barrier.

Israel’s military occupation in Palestine has reached a new apartheid reality in recent years. It is this reality of apartheid that is mobilizing people around the world to take action in their own communities to support the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions as a tangible path for effective international solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Tadamon! in collaboration with Association pour une Solidarité Syndicale Étudiante (ASSÉ) with the support of the Quebec Public Interest Research Group (QPIRG) started organizing a series of workshops once a semester in November 2007 and again in April 2008, leading towards the important adaptation of a boycott resolution from ASSÉ. Once again we are building on this important educational project to continue to fuse the international struggle against Israeli apartheid with Quebec’s powerful student movement.

These workshops are taking place within the framework of Tadamon! Montreal’s two major political campaigns aimed at building solidarity with anti-colonial struggles in the Middle East within Quebec’s student movement…
