IamBlackGirl | Meryem Saci

Daughter of parents who were accidental activists from small Caribbean islands, IamBlackGirl follows those natural instincts; carrying the torch into classrooms and communities, into studios and onto stages, with master’s tools and microphones, exposing to educate, rhyming to rouse. All of that, so that the top tips over and humbles itself; the bottom sees the booby traps and makes a better move. Play deaf, we goin’ be LOUDA!!!!! Get back to the sandbox and start over. One.

Meryem Saci is a Montreal-based and internationally traveled singer/songwriter. A member of the hiphop collective Nomadic Massive, Meryem is also at work on her debut solo project. Growing up in Algeria and leaving it all behind, she came to Canada as a political refugee in 2000. In that time she has written, recorded, and performed words of inspiration, motivation, and justice for people around the world, giving a voice to those who often go unheard.

Nomadic Massive

Kaie Kellough & Jason Sharp (saxophone)

Kaie and his work have been featured on CBC radio, Zed TV, and Bravo. His debut sound recording, Vox:Versus will be released in 2011. Jason Sharp is a baritone/bass saxophonist originally from Edmonton, Alberta. He has studied jazz improvisation at the University of Toronto, Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and understudied with the Jazz Composers Collective in New York City. Since moving to Montreal he can be heard in Josh Zubot’s Mendham Trio, Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush, Nicolas Caloia’s Ratchet Orchestra, Joe Grass’s Tiny Dictators as well as on recordings with Matana Roberts and Silver Mt. Zion for the Constellation label.

Jason “Blackbird” Selman

Jason “Blackbird” Selman has served the Montreal arts scene for almost 15 years as both poet and trumpet player. He has self published several chapbooks over the years culminating in his first published work The Freedom I Stole (2008, Cumulus Press). He has also served as co-editor for the poetry anthology Talking Book which chronicles the writings of the one of a kind musical ensemble Kalm Unity Vibe Collective (of which he is a founding member). Jason is also a part of the dynamic live Hip Hop group Nomadic Massive. As well he is the creator and producer of the Intimate Sky performance series which features select members of both Kalm Unity and Nomadic Massive in enlightening and intimate small group configurations.

The Narcicyst

Yassin Alsalman, the celebrated Iraqi MC known as the Narcicyst, mixes unique beats with smart, socially-conscious lyrics, weaving a complex narrative that spans the Arab and Western world. Alsalman is originally from Basra, Iraq, was raised in Dubai and is now living in Montreal. The Narcicyst’s recently released self-titled studio album, is catching attention around the globe. P.H.A.T.W.A., the album’s first single, was accompanied by a flashy music video which chronicles Alsalman’s experience with a post-9/11 U.S. border interrogation when he attempted to travel to New York City for a concert. Additionally “Hamdulillah” a collaboration with Shadia Mansour was launched between cities around the world and widely celebrated. In the past month Alsalman released “#Jan25” a tribute to the uprising in Egypt with hip-hop artist Omar Offendum, the track was distributed widely on-line and was featured on Al Jazeera. Alsalman has shared the stage with hip-hop luminaries such as Talib Kweli, Kanye West, A-Trak and Dead Prez and his work has been covered widely in the press both in North America and the Middle East. www.iraqisthebomb.com
