Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights and Tadamon! bring you a panel on the colonial roots of administrative detention in Canada and Israel.

Administrative detention is a practice with colonial roots, where we find the similarity between the two colonial entities that are Israel and Canada. In both Israel and Canada, the manner in which bodies are policed leads to practices of detention, mass incarceration, systemic racism, apartheid, and genocide of indigenous peoples and marginalized populations. It is therefore a question of noting the similarities between these two colonial entities, following an anti-abolitionist, anti-colonialist, anti-racist, anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist approach.

This panel and discussion will feature panelists who will approach the subject from various angles. First, we will look at the conditions of certain marginalized populations in Canada and the colonialist and racist policies that justify the use of state surveillance and incarceration as a way of policing these minority populations. Specifically, we will address the administrative detention of migrants and refugee claimants in Canada.

Secondly, we will present the experiences and critical analysis of people who have experienced detention during their process to seek status in Canada.

Third, we will discuss the particularity of Israel’s use of surveillance and mass incarceration of Palestinians as an extension of the Israeli state’s colonialist policies and aims since its founding. We will present the ideological collusion between two political projects of indigenous elimination and state foundation, based on the notion of coloniality and whiteness.

We hope to see you all in large numbers!
We look forward to a constructive and respectful exchange with you.
