September 2008 marks the twenty-sixth anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in which over two thousand Palestinian refugees lost their lives in Beirut, Lebanon.

Palestinian and Jewish Unity (PAJU), Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) and Tadamon! are calling on people to mark this anniversary by participating in the weekly picket outside Indigo bookstore in downtown Montreal, as part of the Canada-wide campaign to boycott Chapters/Indigo bookstore whose majority shareholders are key supporters of Israeli apartheid in Canada.

In September 1982 Israeli forces under the command of Ariel Sharon, provided logistical support for Lebanese right-wing militias who carried out the brutal massacre of thousands of Palestinian civilians in Sabra and Shatila. Israeli forces blockaded the civilian refugee camps as armed militiamen invaded, launching a brutal attack on Palestinian civilians.

Until today no Israeli or Lebanese military commanders or officials behind the massacre have been held accountable for the crimes against humanity committed in Sabra and Shatila.

In 2008, Israel’s brutality against the Palestinian people continues, as apartheid policies grip millions of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. In the past year Israel has maintained a military siege on Gaza, launching systematic attacks on civilians, leaving hundreds of Palestinians dead and an entire population starved of basic resources.

A boycott campaign targeting Chapters/Indigo was launched in December 2006 to target the majority shareholders of Indigo/Chapters, Heather Reisman and Gerry Schwartz, who established the “HESEG Foundation for Lone Soldiers”, a program of financial support for former ‘lone soldiers’, non-Israelis mercenaries who fight in the Israeli military. Israeli ‘lone soldiers’ participated in the 2006 devastating military attack on the people of Lebanon and continue to enforce the illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Across Canada a growing number of people are supporting the Boycott Chapters/Indigo campaign in the context of the international campaign to push for boycott, divestment and sanctions against the apartheid state of Israel.
