Thousands marched on the streets of Montreal throughout recent weeks to protest the Israeli military campaign in Gaza which took an estimated 1300 Palestinian lives in the Gaza Strip. Beyond Montreal protests mounted around the world from Europe, to the Middle East, to Latin America, mobilizations for Gaza that mark some of the largest Palestinian solidarity demonstrations in recent history.

Protests in Montreal in solidarity with Gaza were documented by photojournalist Darren Ell. Tadamon! features selected images from an extended visual slide-show.

As the world monitors a fragile ceasefire in Gaza across the Gaza Strip, Palestinians are slowly rebuilding after the devastating military attack, which saw the U.N. administered schools, the Islamic University of Gaza, hundreds of homes and civilian infrastructure bombed in Israeli air strikes across Gaza.

“Israel and Egypt, supported by the international community, enforced an economic blockade on the Gaza Strip following Hamas’s takeover in June 2007,” outlined Katharina Ritz, head of mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Palestinian territories, “only a bare minimum of humanitarian aid has been allowed in sporadically since then.”

Protests in solidarity with Gaza continue around the world until today, while multiple events and activities in solidarity with Palestine are planned to take place in the upcoming months, including Israeli Apartheid Week.

Darren Ell is a photographer based in Montreal. At present, the Galerie Port-Maurice in St-Léonard (8420 boulevard Lacordaire) is showing Ell’s exhibition of life-size portraits of refugees struggling with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and CSIS. The exhibition, done in collaboration with Solidarity Across Borders and other organizations, features portraits, biographies and audio interviews with security certificate detainees, Palestinian refugees, Abdelkader Belaouni and others facing ominous deportations. The exhibition, entitled Between States, will be touring Montreal throughout 2009.
