In the wake of the brutal killing of 18 month of old Ali Dawabsheh, the Canadian Palestinian Foundation of Quebec (CPFQ) is calling a demonstration to condemn settler violence, the occupation and PA complicity.

On July 31st, Israeli settlers from Ma’ale Efraim firebombed the Dawabsheh family home in Douma and spray-painted nationalist and racist graffiti on a neighbouring home. This occurs against the backdrop of ongoing violence against Palestinian communities, including the torching of olive groves, damaging of civilian cars, attacks on Mosques, churches and religious institutions, as well as frequent physical assaults against Palestinian civilians.

According to UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, between 2009 and 2014 settler violence against Palestinians has risen by 144%.

These events are not isolated incidents or fringe attacks, they are in fact a core element of Israeli settler-colonialism, and the violence inherent to the Israeli colonial project. Last year during the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, over 2200 people were killed according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, 568 of whom where children.

Settler violence reinforces and is reinforced by Israeli colonial expansion on Palestinian territories. Individual attacks against Palestinians occur within a broader framework of militarized violence against Palestinian life. The construction of the Apartheid wall, segregated Israeli and Palestinian roads, the ongoing expropriation of Palestinian land and the routine humiliation and harassment of Palestinian civilian create a context which emboldens settlers living on occupied Palestinian land. Furthermore, such attacks are routinely met with official silence and thus continue with impunity.

Such horrifying events in Palestine don’t occur in a vacuum. The Canadian state meets this violence with uncritical support, and Canada continues to be one of Israel’s closest economic, political and military allies.

In the face of Israeli impunity and Canadian complicity, we urge all supporters to participate in the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement as a tangible act of solidarity with Palestine.

Join us as we take to the streets for an action initiated by the CPFQ and Palestinian community activists this Saturday at noon, in front of the G.C. of Israel at 1 Westmount Sq.
