Blockade! Algonquins Defend the Forest
1990, 26 mins. Directed by Boyce Richardson

Blockade! follows the Barriere Lake Algonquins as they take on the government and the logging industry in a struggle to save their traditional hunting grounds and way of life. In September, 1989, this small indigenous community blockaded logging roads, calling for a moratorium on logging and insisting that the government recognize their rights to have a decisive say in the management of their traditional territories. Filmed on site during the blockades, Blockade offers a portrait of Barriere Lake just before they succeeded in forcing Canada and Quebec to sign the groundbreaking Trilateral agreement in 1991.

Against All Odds: the Algonquins of Barriere Lake
2008, 40 min. Directed by Peter Vicaire & others

This documentary runs the Algonquin’s story through till 2007. Since 1991, Barriere Lake has had to contend with government attempts to break their resistance and push their agreement aside. Canada and Qu ebec have stalled, quibbled over legalities, cut funding, and tried to undermine Barriere Lake’s customary Chief and Council by recognizing and propping up a minority ready to compromise the Algonquin’s rights.

Palestine Blues
2006, 72 min. Directed by Nida Sinnokrot

Palestine Blues takes us on a journey into a vanishing landscape, exposing the motives behind Israel’s Wall, and into the heart of Palestine’s non-violent resistance movement. Focusing on the village of Jayyous in the West Bank and its campaign against the wall, the film documents the heroic victories and tragic defeats of this farming community’s fight for survival. Filming at times with a hidden camera, Palestinian-American filmmaker Nida Sinnokrot gives us a lasting chronicle of a people and their ancient life-giving orchards, threatened by destruction. Palestine Blues is full unforgettable characters, heroism, desperation, poetry and song.
