Tadamon! would like to congratulate the members of the Centrale des Syndicats du Québec (CSQ) on their recent adoption, by a large majority, of a resolution in support of the call made by 171 Palestinian organizations for a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against apartheid Israel until Israel complies with international law and universal principles of human rights.

This is a great achievement by the CSQ, a union that represents 170,000 members in 12 federations and 230 unions across Québec. This courageous stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people living under Israeli apartheid, occupation and siege sends a clear message that Israel’s persistent violations of international law, which began in 1948, will no longer be tolerated by the international community.

We would in particular like to salute the courage of Ms. Monique Pauzé, President of the Champlain Teachers Union, for taking the lead in presenting this resolution, as well as that of all CSQ members who supported the resolution. This position of solidarity with Palestinians and resistance to injustice and oppression taken by Quebec teachers and education workers will give hope to the Palestinian students and educators who recently suffered during the terrifying Israeli invasion of Gaza, in which Israeli forces destroyed the majority of Gazan schools and universities.

The CSQ’s adoption of the BDS resolution is a major step in the path to ending occupation and apartheid in Palestine and will no doubt inspire other unions to take similar steps. Congratulations!

In solidarity,
