Forty-two women and children were killed when an Israeli tank opened fire outside a UN-run school in Gaza today, the third such attack in 24 hours. Two tank shells exploded outside the al-Fakhora school in Jabaliya refugee camp, spraying shrapnel on those inside and outside the building, where hundreds of Palestinians had sought refuge from Israeli shelling.

In response to the ongoing Israeli bombardment on Gaza, Tadamon! is calling on people to directly contact Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Cannon.

Please take a couple minutes to directly call the offices for both the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to demand: that Canada call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, a cessation of the ongoing Israeli siege on Gaza and for Canada to address the root cause for the current violence: Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the denial of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

Protests have swept the Middle East in the past week to stand against Israel’s invasion into the Gaza Strip, in which upwards of 600 Palestinians have lost their lives, but also to protest the complicity of Arab governments in the current Israeli attack. In Egypt and Jordan protesters have clashed in the thousands with state security forces, calling for an end to diplomatic relations with Israel, while in other capitals in the region protesters have confronted the Egyptian embassies. In Beirut protesters carried hundreds of coffins to the Egyptian embassy last week, ending the demonstration with an Egyptian national burning his passport in protest over the Egyptian governments refusal to open the Gaza border amidst a growing humanitarian crisis.

Like much of the world, we have spent the last week watching in shock and disgust as Israel continues its assault on the Gaza Strip. With the body count rising and a new tragedy in full bloom, we feel that it is important to speak out as Jewish youth in Canada and to denounce what Israel is doing in our name. The Jewish diaspora is diverse and divided on its positions on the state of Israel’s policies. At this juncture in history, as Israel has committed its worst massacre in Gaza since it began its illegal occupation in 1967, we feel that it is crucial that Jews speak out and denounce Israel’s actions that amount to no less than war crimes committed by an apartheid state.

The evening of 3 January, we realized that if there was any truth to Israeli war minister Ehud Barak’s words, it’s that this invasion will be a long one. At approximately 9:15pm local time Israeli forces entered the Strip from three locations. From the east of Gaza City and the northern towns of Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, tanks rolled into the Palestinian residential areas while Israeli F-16s created a cover from the sky. At the same time, Israeli tanks and infantry troops entered Rafah from the southeast, while tanks shelling and artillery fire rained on the Mintar area of Gaza City. Israeli warships were simultaneously barraging Gaza City from the sea. The entire Strip was surrounded and being heavily pounded by Israeli missiles and artillery fire.
